Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 delivers an incredible story about heroes and villains grappling with loneliness. Spider-Man 2 feels like it’s right in the centre of Sony’s blockbuster sequel design philosophy. Where Horizon Forbidden West did the same thing but bigger, The Last of Us Part 2 elevated itself technologically, narratively, and most importantly, ambitiously. Spider-Man 2 falls between these approaches – it has some of Horizon’s safety, but with a slice of the elevation The Last of Us brought. Spider-Man 2 is the future of polished, competent, elevated sequels, and brings with it so many technical flourishes and a perfect execution of the formula that it stands in a class of its own.
The pair does not work together as well as they used to, as Miles notices his older colleague gradually change. Previously compassionate, kind and fair Peter Parker has become aggressive, ruthless, even bloodthirsty. He also gained new, powerful abilities that seem to be related to his strange black costume. Each game in the series has a main villain that is set up early in the game, and persists to the end. However, the plot is structured in a way that gives focus to other villains and storylines at the same time.
After watching the latest PlayStation Showcase conference, I have very mixed feelings. On the one hand, Sony showed some really exciting games; on the other, their release dates are either distant, or totally unspecified. There will be no shortage of games to play in January, but don’t count on any spectacular launches. Marvel’s Spider-Man – The Art of the Game is packed with hundreds of exclusive full-color images of Spider-Man, his suit and equipment, the allies he relies on like MJ Watson and Aunt May, and the deadly villains he battles. This wealth of material is accompanied by exclusive insight into the creative process from the talented developers, artists, and designers responsible for bringing Spider-Man’s world to vivid life.

Obviously, since the game hasn’t come out yet, we can’t give you a summary of Spider-Man 2 (we also wouldn’t want to spoil your next adventure). The mid-credits scene reveals that Harry is to be released from his stasis pod, even though his health is still unstable. Peter puts Miles to the test, going off to Symkaria for a couple of weeks to help MJ with her work as a reporter there and leaving Miles in charge of protecting the city, leaving him as the sole Spider-Man in NYC for the first time. Miles reveals to Peter in the credits’ scene that he has gained spider-like powers after he was bitten by a spider that escaped Osborn’s personal lab. Additionally, we’re shown a teaser for the Symbiote in Osborn’s lab, where he has also kept Harry in a tank until he finds a cure for his illness.
The same can be said for both its heroes and villains, as Spider-Man 2 tackles the reasoning behind each character’s actions and the good that can hide in the shadows of evil. Following the conclusions of their respective solo adventures they’re now a tight-knit crime-fighting duo, but both are predictably still struggling to juggle their superhero callings with their personal responsibilities. It’s hard not to feel, though, that Peter’s inability to hold down a job or progress his relationship with MJ feels a little higher stakes than Miles… procrastinating over his college application? Wield Peter’s new symbiote abilities and Miles’ explosive bio-electric venom powers, and discover upgradeable, high-tech equipment that enhances the combat experience for extensive gameplay depth and variety. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’s seems to retain most of the gameplay it had from the previous games based on the gameplay footage that they revealed.
Miles overcomes his anger towards Li and helps him escape, directing him to find Peter. Despite the disappointment, it’s unlikely that any DLC for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 would’ve been very exciting. All of which brings us to Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’s PC system requirements, with Sony’s minimum specification targeting 720p at 30fps on Very Low settings. Those with considerably more powerful hardware (which is to say, an RTX 4090 and i K/Ryzen X3D) can aim for 60fps at 4K resolutions, using Very High Ray Tracing Ultimate settings.
MJ, Harry, and Peter have a heated exchange as Peter fails to recollect the events of the previous evening, and Harry begins to spiral. Miles assists Rio in protecting the culture and musical legacy of the city by investigating and preventing a museum robbery. Peter and Harry return to EMF in an attempt to learn more about Harry’s newfound powers, and let him safely practice. Peter and Miles oversee a prisoner transfer at the R.A.F.T., but are rudely interrupted by Kraven and his forces as they seek to capture the villains for unknown purposes. Take on brutal world-famous explorer, Kraven the Hunter; vicious reptilian creature, Lizard; a symbiote-infused Venom unlike anything you’ve ever seen before, and many more to be discovered. Mask-up and swing into action against a true rogue’s gallery of the biggest Super Villains in Marvel’s bustling roster of bad guys.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, recently released in 2023, is the official action-adventure sequel to 2018’s Spider-Man entry. Insomniac and Sony Interactive Entertainment continue to collaborate on the franchise, releasing the sequel on PS5 platforms. Not only that, but during open-world gameplay, players will be able to freely swap between Peter Parker and Miles Morales at the touch of a button, akin to GTA 5’s character-swapping feature. That’s not to say there aren’t benefits to taking a sneaky route, though, especially when you’re playing as Miles and using his invisibility power to quietly take out enemies. There are many perch takedown possibilities offered and new toys to play with too, such as the Web Line, which allows you to create your own highwires over your enemies to prey on them from above. It’s a fun tool that allows you to reshape the tightly designed arenas into a battlefield more in your favour, and in doing so, redecorate the room with web-wrapped people piñatas. On the other hand, much like combat, stealth isn’t a far cry from the many warehouse encounters you’ll have played in the previous games, as you clear out enemies using largely the same techniques.
The latter features a ton more explosive action sequences than you can imagine. The custom console is a new black, white, and red design, intending to highlight Symbiote tendrils encroaching on the Spider-Man logo. The DualSense features the same color scheme and pattern, with the Spider-Man logo front and center on the touchpad.

Actor Nadji Jeter displays all the range needed for the role, continuing to excel as a younger Spider-Man maturing before our eyes. He’s in his early twenties so has already navigated the difficult years that Miles finds himself in, but thanks to the symbiote suit, he’s working his way through yet more bodily changes. These characters do add a bit more flavour to the world and its largely homogenous population of NPCs you’re clearly not intended to look at too closely. These later stages are where the majority of Spider-Man 2’s thrills lay, however, as it really hits its stride late on, and emphatically wraps up a tale with miles of emotional depth that never once threatens to peter out. Despite being awash with paramilitary criminal organisations, New York has never felt more toothless and dull. My hope for this sequel was that with the core action already perfected, there would be the space to improve on the wider formula, creating a more interesting New York playground. Instead, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 simply has more stuff—a bigger story, more pointless collectibles, sprawling skill trees, and double the Spider-Men. Despite its imperfections and overall lack of side content as well as a rushed third act the gameplay is near perfect in every way possible.
A Flawed Port Of A Flawed Sequel
A particularly memorable mission under the dancing lights of Coney Island’s amusement rides is a highlight that manages to impressively capture the story’s essence and bottle up its emotional tension before emphatically smashing it. For those with a hazy memory, there is a brief recap of both Peter and Miles’ stories so far available, which is handy, as this is very much a sequel that weaves in both plotlines and characters from the previous games and accompanying DLC. You won’t want to jump in for the first time here since Spider-Man 2 builds on the first two games both in its mechanics and its story – but of course, there’s little reason not to, since those games are also excellent. Avoiding mb66 , the basic premise revolves around Kraven the Hunter, who is, well, craving a hunt.

It’s likely that the developers are focusing on the upcoming Marvel’s Wolverine, and any new Spider-Man title will come much later. The focus on Wolverine could be another contributing factor as to why Spider-Man 2 didn’t get any new story DLC. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will be exclusively released on PS5 on October 20, 2023 at midnight, local time. With users able to pre-download the digital game prior to its release, they will be able to play the game as soon as it’s available for play in the PlayStation store. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’s PC release boasts impactful graphical and performance enhancements that allow one of the greatest Spider-Man games to glow gold. While riddled with a few very minor performance issues, the dynamic combat and engaging narrative slings this game to the top of my favourite Action/Adventure games.
