For it to count you have to activate these abilities DURING a Symbiote Surge (after the yellow bar in top right is fully charged and you pressed + to activate it). The best thing MJ contributes to this game is when she turns into Scream. She vents her frustrations with herself and Peter in a way that shows she isn’t this perfect paragon she’s presented as the rest of the time. Lean into that and show that she’s just as flawed as the main two heroes, and more people might actually start to like her. This game falls into the most common pitfall of big open world games.
Though hotfixes are flying thick and fast as I finish out this review, for me the patches have so far failed to tackle frequent crashes to desktop. I find it difficult to diagnose my experience—while others have seen wide-ranging performance issues, for me the game runs smoothly, until it suddenly doesn’t. Without warning, in seemingly undemanding scenes and without any preceding slowdown, the game simply gives up, citing only nonsensical display driver issues. So far it’s happened about once every 30 minutes, seeming to be more frequent during story missions. Following the conclusions of their respective solo adventures they’re now a tight-knit crime-fighting duo, but both are predictably still struggling to juggle their superhero callings with their personal responsibilities. It’s hard not to feel, though, that Peter’s inability to hold down a job or progress his relationship with MJ feels a little higher stakes than Miles… procrastinating over his college application?

While the adventure to take down Kraven is mostly linear, offering players a straightforward narrative, there’s still a lot of side content to dive into, like combat challenges, collectibles, quests, and much more. Enemy behavior has also been updated, teaching them new moves and basic searching for heroes on the ceiling, and the roster of opponents has been expanded. Bosses in the game are diverse, but battles with them are simple and straightforward, as they are manually assembled into action episodes of fights, flights, and non-irritating QTEs.

There are skills for Peter, skills for Miles, and shared abilities — and absolutely everything can be upgraded in one playthrough. Individual skills will benefit one character or the other, while the common tree will enhance both. Development includes increasing health, damage, acrobatics, and recovery speed of moves. After a large-scale prologue that immediately grabs attention, the plot focuses on the confrontation with the antagonist Kraven the Hunter, who wants to eliminate all superheroes and supervillains. As the struggle with him unfolds, the narrative shifts its focus to Norman Osborn and his son Harry, who suffers from a mysterious illness. The city’s loading has been accelerated, and now you can switch between heroes in the app or teleport quickly in just a couple of seconds.
